Data key to Triovest improving its overall GRESB score

The man responsible for innovation and sustainability credits access to data as the key reason Triovest improved its overall score in the 2019 GRESB Real Estate Assessment. Triovest scored 91 out of 100, among the best in Canada and its global peer group.

Toronto Mayor John Tory is pulling together major commercial landowners, universities, and hospitals in the city to form a new initiative aimed at reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Dubbed Green Will, it represents 300 million square feet of space.

As part of World Green Building Week, the Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC) and the Canada Coalition for Green Schools are happy to announce the winner of the annual Greenest School in Canada competition is Ferris Elementary School in Richmond, BC.

Nicolas Laisné’s vast Arboretum project is a different kind of office development. Mass timber construction is relatively new, with Cross-Laminated Timber barely 30 years old. But, judging by the work presented at the Woodrise, we have finally reached Critical Mass Timber.

Leading up to Renovation Month, Built Green Canada has launched its High-Density Renovation Program pilot. Four projects are already enrolled in this program, courtesy of Strategic Group’s office-to-residential repurposing projects in Calgary and Edmonton.

One of the advances picking up steam lately is an energy-efficient heating and cooling system that uses geothermal technology.  Subterra Renewables is a thermal energy company reporting more interest in the systems from builders and municipalities seeking sustainable solutions.

Hudson Yards’ Eastern Yard has been awarded the LEED Neighborhood Development Gold certification, becoming the first neighborhood in Manhattan to receive the designation. It is the first phase of  Related Cos. and Oxford Properties project which opened in March 2019.

Politics of Climate Change

 • 

Google has reduced its 2011 greenhouse emission levels from office facilities in New York City 54% ahead of the original goal. In 2013, Google became a member of the NYC Carbon Challenge and pledged to reduce building-based greenhouse gas emissions 30% by 2023.

 • 

Raw sewage — flowing through a massive trunk line running under Riverside Drive — is being heralded as an untapped energy source for the Windsor International Aquatic Centre. The pilot project is expected to reduce the $270,000 annual energy costs by at least $150,000.

 • 

On Sept. 23, McCain joined a coalition of food companies “determined to take bold action to protect and restore cultivated and natural biodiversity within their value chains.” It will attempt to grow potatoes at an industrial scale without degrading the environment.

 • 

National Bank of Canada announced its inaugural USD 750 million 3-year Sustainable Bond offering. The net proceeds will be used to finance eligible businesses and projects in green and social assets, such as hydropower, social housing or daycare centers.

MEG Energy, an Alberta oilpatch company, is looking for government support for a new project that aims to erase emissions from its oil sands facility and possibly from other nearby operations by capturing greenhouse gas emissions and bury them.

 • 

A $200-million Danish-Canadian solar power project in Alberta is headed for construction following an agreement that TC Energy Corp. will buy over half its electricity output.  The project will add to the 450 MW of electricity TC currently operates and markets.

 • 

Two tidal energy companies are joining forces to develop technology to harness the Bay of Fundy’s powerful tides. Sustainable Marine Energy and Minas Tidal LP will use turbines on a floating platform to produce up to nine MW of electricity.

 • 

Increasingly, urban communities across Canada are seeing the big picture, hiring consultants and adopting plans to cope with the long-term problem of climate change. Hans Arisz’s job as an engineer currently working in Saint John, N.B. has just become bigger.

The 2020 “Canada’s Clean50” awards will celebrate the accomplishments of 50 sustainability leaders from across Canada.  The award winners were selected from a field of 700 plus nominees and competed in 16 widely different categories.  The Clean50 Awards also identifies 10 Emerging Leaders for recognition.

An important evolution is a realization that Upfront Carbon Emissions the carbon released in the making of stuff is as important as the operating emissions. The World GBC recognized this dynamic in their report Bringing Embodied Carbon Upfront.

B.C. may be as far as 15 to 20 years behind some European jurisdictions in developing a clean-tech cluster. Foresight officially launched its B.C. Cleantech Cluster Initiative on September 25 in a bid to cultivate an alliance of local partners.
