DIALOG pitches 105-storey hybrid mass timber tower

DIALOG, a leading global design firm based in Toronto, has developed a prototype design that could see hybrid mass timber towers sprouting in major cities and climbing as high as 105 storeys. The patent-pending design also creates a zero-carbon tower.

Windmill Developments and the City of Guelph have received One Planet Living endorsement for the city’s Baker District development. It is the second project in Canada to receive such an endorsement, and the third in North America.

R-Hauz Solutions Inc.’s co-founder and principal Leith Moore says Ontario’s first six-storey mass timber residential rental building, a 13,500 square foot pilot in Toronto’s Beaches neighbourhood, is a viable new mid-rise housing model which speeds design, development and construction.

Canada’s green building sector needs to adopt a new, more inclusive vocabulary in order to build a greater consensus for climate action, said Paul Hawken, the keynote speaker at Canada Green Building Council’s online Building Lasting Change 2020 Conference.

The federal government intends to exceed Canada’s 2030 climate goal and legislate a further goal of net-zero emissions by 2050 according to this week’s throne speech. The pledge would be supported through investments in green infrastructure and affordable housing.

Walmart announced it will electrify and zero-out emissions from all Walmart vehicles, including long haul trucks, by 2040. That includes more than 10,000 vehicles, 6,500 semi-trucks and 4,000 passenger vehicles. Walmart recently ordered several dozen Tesla electric semi-trucks for a Canadian fulfillment centre.
