TD highlights commitment to a sustainable future

TD Bank Group (TD-T) bolstered its sustainability efforts in 2020, with its annual environmental, social and governance report (ESG) underlining a variety of business, philanthropy and employee investments, including plans to link senior executive compensation with its ESG performance.

Harvard University’s Science and Engineering Complex has been certified by two international building programs as one of the healthiest, most sustainable, and energy-efficient laboratories in the world. The 544,000-square-foot complex has received LEED platinum and Living Building Challenge Petal certification.

More than 600 homes will be heated by renewable natural gas generated during the liquid wastewater treatment process in Richmond. The Lulu Island Renewable Gas Facility – part of Lulu Island Wastewater Treatment Plant – is a partnership between Metro Vancouver and FortisBC.

When Elon Musk tweeted out a challenge looking for the best carbon capture technology, the City of Estevan knew that the carbon capture and storage (CCS) facility at SaskPower’s Boundary Dam Power Station is definitely worth showing off.

Energy Profiles

As Canada’s largest metallurgical coal producer, B.C.-based Teck Resources Ltd. has a significant carbon profile. Teck has pledged to reduce the carbon intensity of its operations by 33% over the next nine years. It is also aiming for carbon neutrality by 2050.

Nickel 28 Capital Corp., one of Canada’s only pure-play nickel and cobalt producers, has purchased 52,500 carbon offsets on the Verra Registry. The company believes this will make it the mining industry’s first carbon-neutral refined nickel-cobalt producer.

Bloomberg Green recently found companies with science-based climate goals cut their emissions faster than those without. As companies seek to reduce GHGs,  few are able to immediately reduce them to zero which explains why carbon offsets have become important.

Sun Life Financial Inc. (SLF-T) announced sustainable investing and climate change actions that will drive meaningful outcomes for lower carbon, more inclusive economy. Sun Life has set a goal to invest an additional $20 billion in sustainable investments by 2026.

Bell celebrated its status as the first North American communications company to achieve ISO 50001 certification for energy management by announcing a plan to be carbon neutral across its operations in 2025.

Air Canada announced its long-term commitment to advancing climate change sustainability throughout its business. The airline has set ambitious climate targets to realize a goal of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) throughout its global operations by 2050.

Corporate sustainability has evolved and companies have made significant strides in recent years. However, their sustainability strategies often neglect their political involvement and their political activities may not be fully aligned with their sustainability activities or their stated values.

Canada’s six largest banks have added ESG to their CEOs compensation frameworks. Canadian lenders stand out because only nine per cent of the 2,684 companies in the FTSE All World Index tracked by Sustainalytics in 2020 had tied executive pay to ESG.

The number of shareholder proposals filed at U.S. companies on workforce diversity has doubled this year to a record 69, driven by the growing focus on racial injustice and the impact of the Black Lives Matter movement.

Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI), the global certification body for the LEED green building program, announced its 2021 Board of Directors. GBCI is responsible for driving implementation of the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) program through certification and credentialing.

The City of Laval has approved the implementation of its project to convert 37,000 streetlighting fixtures to LED luminaries with smart controls. Dimonoff and Pierre Brossard Ltée (a subsidiary of Black & McDonald) have been tasked with executing the project.

The City of Calgary is exploring an incentive program for how neighbourhoods are rebuilt using hail-resistant materials to protect against severe weather events. The incentive would provide home owners with a $2,000 rebate for upgrading a roof with hail-resistant materials.

OPINION: Soon, the Supreme Court of Canada will issue its decision on the constitutionality of the federal Greenhouse Gas Pollution Pricing Act. Politicians in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario will dance in the streets if the court overturns the legislation.
