Billions for green energy in Alberta, Saskatchewan

With up to $50 billion to be spent on renewable energy projects in Alberta and Saskatchewan over the next 14 years, suppliers want details on how the money will be spent and which projects they can bid on.  The estimate came Thursday from David Hickey, of Siemens Canada’s wind and renewables division, speaking at a panel in Calgary.

Washington, D.C. topped North America in the expansion of green roof installations last year with Toronto coming in second, according to the latest edition of the Green Roof Industry Survey.  Green Roofs for Healthy Cities (GRHC), the green roof and wall industry association, announced the industry grew 18.5 per cent in 2015.

The Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC) and the U.S.-based Urban Green Council have announced a partnership that aims to broaden Green Professional Building Skills Training (GPRO) within Canada.  Geared at trade professionals, GPRO consists of a series of courses and certificate exams developed by the Urban Green Council that aim to close the gap between conventional and sustainable construction practices.

Bill would eliminate NY greenhouse gas emissions by 2050

New York lawmakers have introduced a bill that would make Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s climate and clean energy goals law, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions from anthropogenic sources by 100 percent, compared with 1990 levels, by 2050. It also sets an incremental GHG reduction target of at least 50 percent by 2030.

Insurance companies taking too big a risk on fossil fuels, report says

The US insurance industry, the country’s second largest institutional investor in oil, gas and coal with $459bn in fossil fuel investments, needs to divest or face serious threats to its financial stability, according to a report released Tuesday.  The report, funded by Ceres, a Boston-based sustainability advocacy group, analyzes investment data from the country’s 40 largest insurance companies, including Prudential, AIG, Metlife, State Farm and Allstate.
