Clean fuel technologies opening new doors for Nova Bus

Canadian bus manufacturer Nova Bus is making waves south of the border sealing yet another deal in the Midwest, this time to supply Milwaukee County with 15 long-range electric buses.

NFI Group Inc. is stepping up its design game as electric bus demand is gaining momentum across North America. The Winnipeg-based bus maker unveiled its next-generation, battery-electric Xcelsior Charge NG heavy-duty transit bus that features high-energy, range-extending batteries.

Ottawa has announced $400 million over five years to help build new and expanded networks of pathways, bike lanes, trails, and pedestrian bridges. This is the first federal fund dedicated to building active transportation through Canada – powered by people.

Petaluma, Calif., banned the construction of new gas stations within city limits. The new law caps the number of stations at 16, even if some go out of business, and prohibits existing facilities from adding additional pumps.

Two coal-fired units at SaskPower’s boundary dam near Estevan, Sask., are to close down this year and in 2024. To that end, Estevan is working with Covenant Energy CEO Josh Gustafson to secure a large renewable diesel refinery in the area.

Researchers at Linköping University, Sweden, have developed a material, nanoporous cubic silicon carbide, that exhibits promising properties to capture solar energy and split water for hydrogen gas production. The study has been published in the journal ACS Nano.

This past week, British fashion designer Stella McCartney unveiled a black “leather” bustier top and pants made not from cowhide, but mycelium, which is grown from fungi. Until now, leather that wasn’t made from animals was made from plastic.

As the mass timber building movement grows in Canada, so does the construction industry’s confidence working with it. One reason is builders see the benefits of prefabrication, according to Jana Foit, architect at the Vancouver office of Perkins&Will.

Minto Communities has launched its Oakvillage phase 4A residential tower in Oakville, Ont. The first of two towers, North Oak will feature the developer’s first multi-residential geoexchange energy system which can reduce carbon emissions by as much as 70 per cent.

The Canadian Cattlemen’s Association announced the contribution of $1.27 million from Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) in additional funding to continue conservation activities with beef producers to protect Greater Sage Grouse critical habitat in the Alberta Grassland Natural Region.

One of Saskatchewan’s most prominent business groups is sketching a plan to curb carbon emissions. In a report, Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce aims to take “prompt, planned, and productive” action so businesses can avoid the worst risks of climate change.

Calgary-based Suncor Energy is investing in Svante Inc. of Vancouver – a carbon capture technology company – to reduce or offset its greenhouse gas emissions. Its investment in Svante will support a technology that could reduce the cost of carbon capture.

Ottawa is investing $50.5 million in Moltex Energy Canada to help the development of the company’s stable salt nuclear reactor and spent fuel recycling technology. The money includes $47.5 million from the Strategic Innovation Fund and $3 million from the regional innovation program.

Everything about the Bruce Nuclear Generating Station (Bruce Power) is big. It’s the largest nuclear-power station in the Western Hemisphere. Located on the shores of Lake Huron about 240 km northwest of Toronto, it generates close to one-third of Ontario’s electricity.

Imperial Oil Ltd. is recommending investors attending its annual meeting in May vote against a shareholder resolution to adopt a corporate-wide target to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 being made by Aequo Shareholder Engagement Services on behalf of Batirente.

McMaster University president David Farrar is pushing the school’s board of governors to divest from fossil fuels “as soon as possible,” saying the school’s students and staff are pushing for more action to address climate change.
