The massive Vancouver redevelopment Oakridge Park is incorporating 500 Level 2 electric vehicle (EV) chargers which have been delivered by local firm Hypercharge Networks Corp. (HC-X).

Vancouver-based Hypercharge has provided 300 wall-mounted, single-port chargers that will be placed in locations around the project where wall-mounted units can be accommodated. It has also shipped in 200 overhead single-port chargers designed to serve multiple parking stalls in its high-density valet parking area.

A 28-acre project being co-developed by QuadReal Property Group and Westbank Corp., the mixed-use Oakridge Park will feature a fully electrified 6,000-car garage, with the charging component powered by clean energy.

“By partnering with Hypercharge, we are ensuring that Oakridge Park is equipped with an innovative, space-efficient EV charging solution that meets the evolving needs of our residents, tenants and visitors,” Chrystal Burns, executive vice-president of Canadian retail at QuadReal, said in the announcement.

EV chargers meet Oakridge's needs

The overhead chargers that are placed on the ceiling were singled out by Hypercharge as a particularly well-suited addition to Oakridge Park. The high-density valet parking facilities will need to be efficient with space, so overhead equipment will offset the need for dedicated EV stalls that take up more room.

“With a unique parking model, the project demands a smart, space-saving charging setup that maximizes efficiency while maintaining seamless accessibility,” David Bibby, president and CEO of Hypercharge, said in a release.

The company’s Eevion software will be integrated into Oakridge Park’s integrated building management platform for real-time monitoring and smart management, he added.

Hypercharge distributes EV chargers across North America and offers a series of EV charging services.

In British Columbia, the company was contracted to deliver 788 charging stations to PCI Developments for its King George Hub development in Surrey. It also forged a deal to provide 200 Level 2 chargers to Mattamy Homes in the Toronto area.

As of February, the company has sold over 5,000 charging ports and delivered over 3,500 in Canada and the U.S.

Oakridge Park's sustainability

The Hypercharge chargers will service a major project that is revamping the former Oakridge Mall with a mix of residential, retail, office and community spaces.

Upon planned completion in 2029, Oakridge Park is expected to span five million square feet with 10 towers, over 4,300 residential and rental units, and approximately 1.6 million square feet of office and retail space.

It will also feature other sustainability elements, including a low-carbon heating and cooling system which will be beneath the feet of Oakridge Park residents and shoppers.

Vancouver-based district energy company Creative Energy has been tasked to develop a system that incorporates geoexchange, heat recovery chillers, electric chillers, and electric and natural gas boilers to heat and cool the development. The system is designed to cut 68 per cent of the greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional solutions that rely on fossil fuels.
